Camera or Microphone Not Working in Video Chat? Start Here

Troubleshoot video chat camera and microphone access: browser permission, device settings, selected inputs and a simple before-call checklist.

The short answer

If your camera or microphone is not working, check both the browser’s permission for the site and the device’s permission for the browser. Then check the selected input, close other apps using the device and reload the page. Granting permission does not itself start a Camrivo call; use the call controls when you are ready.

1. Check the site permission

A blocked camera or microphone can stop a video call from working even when the hardware is fine. In Chrome, open Settings, then Privacy and security, Site settings, and Camera or Microphone. Find the site and review its permission. Menu names can vary by device and browser version.

If you previously selected “Never allow,” a page reload alone may not change the decision. Update the site’s permission, return to the page and try again. On a managed work or school device, an administrator may control the setting.

Only allow access on the intended site. Do not weaken browser security or install an unknown extension to make a call work.

2. Check the device permission and input

Your operating system can block the browser independently of the website setting. Review camera and microphone access in your device’s privacy settings and make sure the browser has permission. If you are using a headset or external webcam, check that it is connected and selected.

In Chrome’s microphone settings you can select the default microphone. Check the camera selector too if your device has more than one. A disconnected headset, a muted microphone or a closed webcam cover can look like a website problem.

  • Check physical mute switches and camera covers.
  • Confirm the intended microphone and camera are selected.
  • Reconnect an external device if it has disappeared from the input list.

3. Match the symptom to the next check

Avoid changing many settings at once. Make one change, reload, and see whether the symptom changes.

Camera unavailable or busyOther apps using the webcam, connection and physical cover
No microphone soundSelected input, headset connection and mute controls
Your preview works, but the other side is blankConnection state and the other participant; this alone does not prove your camera is broken
It fails only inside another app’s browserTry opening the official site in a current standalone browser

4. Retry once, then ask for help with details

Close other camera-using apps, reopen the intended browser and return to the site. On Camrivo, review the matching or profile-call screen before starting again, including any allowance or rate shown. Do not keep buying credits to troubleshoot a permission problem.

If it still fails, contact support with the device type, operating system, browser version and exact error message. Do not send account passwords, payment details or private call recordings. A screenshot of the error is useful only after you remove personal information.
